Applies to: ZuperLink HL7 Interface Engine 5.0, 5.0 SP1; ZuperChart Records Server 2016, 2019, 2019 R2

Symptoms

Inbound ADT^A04 and ADT^A08 messages from some registration systems are acknowledged with MSA|AE| and the error ZL-2207: Patient identifier exceeds maximum length. The message is written to the dead-letter queue and the patient does not appear in the master patient index.

MSH|^~\&|REGSYS|CASCADEFM|ZUPERLINK|ZUPERMICRO|20260609104411||ADT^A04|MSG00731|P|2.5.1
PID|1||0004471902117^^^CASCADEFM^MR||ABERNATHY^HAROLD^Q||19541103|M|||...

Cause

PID-3 carries a 13-character identifier. ZuperChart stores the MRN as a nine-digit field (see Why does the MRN have nine digits?). ZuperLink 5.0 validates PID-3.1 against the MRN length before it applies the facility’s identifier-mapping table, so identifiers that would map to a valid MRN are rejected first.

Resolution

Install ZuperLink 5.0 Service Pack 2, which applies the mapping table before validation. As a workaround, add a TRIM_LEADING_ZEROS rule for the sending facility in Interface Manager > Facilities > Identifier Rules. Do not enable TRUNCATE_LEFT: it keeps the last nine characters and can merge two patients.

Status

Zupermicro has confirmed that this is a problem in the Zupermicro products listed in the “Applies to” section. This problem was first corrected in ZuperLink HL7 Interface Engine 5.0 Service Pack 2.
