Some of you noticed that one of the authors on this blog is named “Front Desk.” Front Desk is not a person. Front Desk is an account, and it has been around longer than most of our employees.
In the early days, the website was run by whoever was sitting at the front desk. To make that work, somebody created
a shared WordPress account called frontdesk, and the receptionist of the day would log in and post the
holiday hours. When people left, the account stayed, because the holiday hours still needed posting.
I am occasionally asked whether the password has been changed since then. I will not tell you what the password is. I will tell you that it was chosen by a receptionist in 2014, that it was written on a sticky note attached to the monitor, and that the sticky note said what you probably expect it to say, with some numbers on the end.
Our IT team has promised to retire the account “after the next holiday season.” They have been promising this since 2016.
